About Mary Renault

Eileen Mary Challans, known by her pen name Mary Renault, was an English writer best known for her historical novels set in ancient Greece. Born in Forest Gate in 1905. Mary Renault's works are not well known in Newham and her memories and legacy in helping to bring awareness about LGBTQ+ issues are not recognised. She wrote the first British novel to face homosexual love squarely (The Charioteer). Her book has come to stand as a landmark of gay literature (R. Cooke, 2013, The Guardian). Some authors, such as D. Sweetman, note that some reviewers linked the book to the growing movement for reform of the laws against homosexuality in Britain and 'even drew the support of the Church of England's official newspaper'.
